Nutritional Supplements
There is no single ‘superfood’ that can provide everything we need and so the key is the balance of our diet overall. A varied and balanced diet with the right proportions of foods from the main food groups, should provide enough vitamins and minerals (except for vitamin D) to meet the needs of most people. However, supplementation is recommended in certain situations (see below for more information).
Most people should be able to get all the vitamins and minerals they need (except for vitamin D) by eating a healthy, varied diet. Supplements are not a substitute for a healthy diet, which provides other important dietary components such as fibre, which helps maintain gut health and reduces the risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and bowel cancer.
At Nansledan Chiropractic we will often advise nutritional supplements for different reasons such as to help maintain joint health or naturally help to reduce inflammation in the body. Lamberts Healthcare (www.lambertshealthcare.co.uk) is our chosen supplement provider. They also provide lots of continuing professional development (CPD) seminars which Mike regularly attends due to his interest in nutrition.

Glucosamine
Glucosamine Complete
120 tablets £22.95
Glucosamine Complete combines GlucosaGreen® with Phytodroitin™ - a plant-origin alternative to chondroitin, manufactured from a blend of seaweed extracts. Lamberts Glucosamine Complete provides 330mg of Phytodroitin™ (per 3 tablets), equivalent to 300mg of pure chondroitin. With a focus on relevant botanicals, the powerful bioflavonoid, quercetin, has been included at a potent 50mg, plus 1200mg of ginger and 400mg of rose hips. Our formula is complete by the addition of 150mg of MSM.
-
Quercetin: a bioflavonoid that is naturally found in fruit and vegetables, particularly in apples. This bioflavonoid is a potent antioxidant and may also play a part in inhibiting the production and release of histamines.
-
Ginger: a popular spice, often used alongside glucosamine.
-
Rose hips: naturally rich in vitamin C and contribute to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage.
-
MSM: as a naturally occurring sulphur compound, MSM is one of the major building blocks of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), a key component of cartilage.

Turmeric
Turmeric Fast Release
60 tablets £13.95
Each tablet contains 200mg of turmeric root extract, equivalent to a full 10,000mg of turmeric spice (or two heaped teaspoons). It is standardised to provide 95% curcuminoids, which is the level generally used in studies. Furthermore, these Turmeric tablets are fast release, disintegrating between 15 and 30 minutes for speedy absorption. Plus, these one-a-day tablets are suitable for both vegetarians and vegans.

Multi Vitamin
Multiguard High Strength
90 tablets £19.95
If you are looking for a high potency multi formula then we highly recommend MultiGuard® as the best for both potency and spread of nutrients. It is probably the most comprehensive one-a-day multi vitamin and mineral formula on the market and is suitable for all adults.
All the vitamins in this product are present at relevant potencies, making it a useful product where a medium to high potency B complex is needed, along with excellent levels of the antioxidants vitamins C and E, and double the vitamin D content of most multis.
It is the trace minerals in MultiGuard®, however, that have made this product so popular with practitioners. Few, if any, multivitamin and mineral products have such a broad spectrum of trace minerals present at relevant levels even though research shows these vital nutrients are as important, and essential, as vitamins. Of particular note is the level of selenium and chromium that have been included, that greatly exceeds the levels found in most one-a-day formulas.
MultiGuard® also contains a unique blend of plant compounds from green tea and rosemary extracts which provides 625 ORAC units per tablet.
Daily intake: 1 tablet

Omega-3 fish oils
Pure Fish Oil
60 capsules £15.95
180 capsules £31.95
These capsules contain a concentrated fish oil which provides a full 700mg of omega 3s per capsule (many 1000mg fish oil products contain just 350mg of omega 3s). This means that this product is one of the strongest available in the UK and is therefore widely recommended by practitioners. The fish oil undergoes a sophisticated purification process that ensures it is largely odour free, with levels of contaminants well below the strict EU maximum limits. The oil is then protected from oxidation while it is in the capsules by the inclusion of natural vitamin E.
The most beneficial ingredients in fish oil are the two omega 3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. Research has shown that omegas 3s play a vitally important part in maintaining our health and wellbeing and it is for this reason that fish oil supplements are regularly recommended by practitioners.
The official recommendation by the Department of Health is that people should consume two portions of oily fish per week to obtain sufficient omega 3s. This is good advice but one that is followed by relatively few people, and so the use of fish oil supplements is the best option for many.

Magnesium
MagAsorb
60 tablets £10.50
180 tablets £20.95
Lamberts® MagAsorb® is now one of the UK's leading magnesium products, providing 150mg of pure magnesium per tablet. The magnesium in Magasorb®is in the highly bioavailable citrate form. In tests comparing MagAsorb®with two other commonly used magnesium compounds, the absorption of MagAsorb®in the body was superior.
Magnesium is an important mineral that contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and the normal functioning of the nervous system. It also contributes to maintaining normal muscle function, including the heart muscle. Magnesium is also increasingly recognised as a nutrient that contributes to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
According to official data 72% of women and 42% of men in the UK fail to consume sufficient dietary magnesium which is largely due to the processing and refining of foods which can remove a large proportion of the magnesium from a food. Multivitamin supplements typically provide little or no magnesium.
Daily intake: 1 to 2 tablets

Mental Health
PEA
60 capsules £24.95
Lamberts® Neuro-Logical uses the highest quality palmitoylethanolamide, otherwise known as PEA (OptiPEA®), enhanced with vitamins B1, B6 and B12 which are known to support normal neurological and psychological functions.
PEA is a fascinating nutraceutical ingredient that is often described as a safe ‘alternative to cannabidiol (CBD)’, given that the therapeutic actions of both compounds overlap in their biochemical roles in humans. Whilst initially discovered over 50 years ago, the past few decades have seen renewed research to understand PEA’s mechanism of action. PEA is produced naturally in the human body in situations where cells or tissues are damaged. Until the 90s no one knew why that was, until Nobel Prize laureate Rita Levi-Montalcini found that PEA can calm overactive mast cells.
